And on it goes…

Having stayed up pretty much all night on May 6th, I’m finally recovering from the lack of sleep. It’s now the following Monday and still no deal or confirmation on who will be making up the next Government. After listening to all three admirable, and very Statesmanlike, responses from the Party Leaders on Friday, I was feeling quite optimistic that finally a period of grown-up, consensual politics could be the outcome of a Hung Parliament after all. In our 24 hour media world, the shortest information vacuum quickly gets filled however, and it hasn’t taken long for tribalism and negativity to creep back in. I’m still hopeful for a resolution that will enable a period of stability with which to tackle the massive financial crisis that faces the country. I’m also fairly sure that there is a large silent majority that simply wants decision and teamwork – and are not too hung up on party colours as such. Read the rest of this entry »

Finally, Polling Day is here

It’s been a long month following the build up to Polling Day, but one that I have really enjoyed engaging with. In the end, it wasn’t the ‘Digital Election‘ that was predicted at the outset; TV proved ultimately to be the biggest influencer of all. Mix-tapes and Social Media

In a follow up to my recent post about Spotify, here’s a little piece of mix-tape sharing – made possible by Spotify playlists and social media.

I used to love creating mix-tapes for myself and my friends; and receiving them in return was always very special. The whole process was an art form, and the amount of thought and care that went into each playlist was enormous.

I know I’m not alone in holding an abiding affection for the mix-tape. Nothing reminds you of a time in your life as much as the accompanying soundtrack.

While it’s now easy to recreate some of those old favourites with Spotify, fundamentally, it can’t really compare. I remember faults in the tape, or the distortion that would occur between tracks – no matter how much you tried to remove it. Those sounds became as much a part of the experience as the songs, and it’s odd hearing a digital version without them. Read the rest of this entry »
