Figure Drawing

Charcoal figure drawing - Helen Davison

‘Mandy’. Charcoal on toned Roma paper

My latest figure study, this was completed over 10 sessions. The main battle was with the handling of the charcoal – working the surface of the paper and refining the drawing as it went along.

I personally prefer the look of something a little sketchier with more interesting mark-making, however the aim of the exercise (for me) was to accurately see the shapes and proportions of the figure and to be able to control what I put down. Turning that into a more artisitic expression is something for a different project. This is a learning study, and one that I keep intending to back up with anatomy studies too. Time and energy seem to escape me unfortunately.
